This week, the pre-kindergarten classes learned all about the digestive system, our bodies, and healthy eating. First, Mrs. Barb read ‘The Flip Flap Body Book.’ In it we learned how our body is like a factory with many processes taking place as soon as we take a bite of food. We learned the role of the teeth, tongue, esophagus, and small and large intestine.
Next, we watched a short video to show how our digestive system works. The kids loved it! The children also read several other books about our bodies with magnifying glasses. While magnifying glasses are not necessary, they do make reading books a lot more fun and interesting!
We also stretched out a piece of yarn that was about 20 feet long, the length of our small intestine to illustrate just how large it is. The children were shocked to find out how long the intestines are!
The children enjoyed making a pretend digestive track using paper tubes. We pushed food (marbles) through the system the way food passes through our body.
One of the children’s favorite activities was painting with colorful foods to make a rainbow. We used celery, tomatoes, blueberries, grapes, oranges, and peppers! We learned that healthy eating means eating a variety of colorful foods!
As always, science day is a time to learn more about our Creator. He made our bodies in such an amazing way that the children couldn’t help but be fascinated!
