Discovering the World Around Me! -Toddler Autumn Activity

Discovering the World Around Me! -Toddlers Learning Activity

Now that it is October, we have been talking with the children about the leaves outside. We read ‘Leaves’ by Melvin and Gilda Berger.  We learned that the green leaves change into many different colors in the fall. The leaves can change to orange, brown, yellow, red and even purple. Leaves come in many different shapes and sizes!

Sensory activities are so important at this age as children really learn about the world around them through tactile experiences. One of the best ways for this is to go outside and observe what God has made! We went outside and played in a leaf pile. The children had a wonderful time throwing leaves in the air and watching them fall slowly down. Down, down, down. They loved sitting down and looking at all the colorful leaves surrounding them. We talked about what color the leaves were and also if the leaf was big or small. They especially loved running through the leaves and hearing them crunch with every step.

During our art time, the kids painted using leaves instead of paintbrushes! We used the leaves that were collected from our outside playtime. We painted with the autumn colors we had been talking about: red, yellow, brown, purple, and orange. Some of the children were very excited to paint with the leaves, while a couple of the children were unsure about using the leaves for this purpose. It was so much fun experiencing God’s world through the eyes of a toddler.

In the toddler classroom, every time we do an activity, we are helping so many developmental skills flourish through some key areas of focus. In this lesson, we focused on Language, Literacy, Mathematics, Art, Physical Wellness, and The World and Me. It truly is amazing to see how much the children grow and learn on a daily basis at this age. We have so much fun in the Bunny classroom!
