We are so blessed to live in a city chock full of fun—and free—things to do! Here’s just a sampling of some of the exciting things you and your little ones can do around town.
1. The Arts Garden
Awe your little ones inside this seven-story-tall glass structure suspended above Washington and Illinois Streets downtown. This beautiful venue hosts more than 300 free lunchtime events including music performances, dance, readings and art exhibitions each year. Check out their calendar of events to see what’s coming up!
2. Indianapolis Museum of Art
During regular hours, the IMA is free! Stroll through the museum to expose your kids to incredible artwork of all different kinds. You’ll want to have younger kids in a stroller as museum staff are understandably wary of little fingers near the masterpieces. Then get outside and enjoy The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres—a gorgeous sprawling area full of trees, trails, a lake, touchable outdoor art, and even a swingset! Pack a picnic and make a day of it.
3. Pet Store
Love animals but don’t have the time or money for the zoo? Head out to your local pet store. We love Uncle Bill’s in Fishers, but there are many to choose from. Take the time to marvel at the different animal breeds and maybe even snuggle a puppy or two!
4. Children’s Museum
Don’t have a membership to our awesome Children’s Museum? No problem! Check out their calendar of special free admission dates. Tip: Crowds tend to be much lighter later in the day. Parking is free in the adjoining garage. A sky bridge takes you right into the museum.
5. Ride the IU Health People Mover
All aboard! This one might sound funny, but it’s a guaranteed win with the kiddos. This elevated train transports people between the IU Health Methodist and University hospitals all day long. It runs every eight minutes and kids think it’s a ball. Riley Hospital is actually a beautiful place to walk around as well. Spread some love while you are there by donating some books, DVDs or board games to the Riley Family Library.
6. Library Story Hour & Open Play
Most every library around has story time and other free events for kids. The Carmel Clay Public Library even has a small play area for kids to explore, friendly little reading nooks, as well as read-alouds and other scheduled activities.
7. Lego Store Build & Take
For your little builders ages 6-14, you won’t want to miss this! Check out the Castleton Square Lego Store on the first Tuesday of every month (starts at 5pm) for a free mini model build. Each child gets a small model kit and learns how to build it. Make sure to arrive early as spots are limited.
